  1. John Arthur McFarland Jr. was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1919. He entered the US Navy in 1940 and was assigned to the USS Northampton. In the the Guadalcanal Campaign, the Northampton was sunk by two Japanese torpedo’s, which caused mass fires and flooding aboard the ship. Seaman 1st Class McFarland was declared Missing in Action on December 1, 1942. His parents, John and Lucile McFarland were posthumously given John’s Purple Heart, American Defense Service Medal, and WWII Victory Medal. He was officially declared deceased on December 1, 1943.
