Death details: On January 16, 2019, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Private Winfred Lee Reynolds, missing from the Korean War. Private Reynolds, who joined the U.S. Army from North Carolina, served with the Medical Company, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On April 26, 1951, he was attached to Company C, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry, when his unit’s defensive positions northwest of the town of Inje, South Korea were attacked by Chinese Communist Forces. He was killed during this battle while caring for wounded soldiers. Private Reynolds was buried near the area of his loss, but later investigations there failed to locate his remains. In 2017, a South Korean investigative team recovered human remains from near Inje, which were then transferred to DPAA facilities for further analysis. U.S. forensic analysts successfully identified these remains as those of Private Reynolds. Private Reynolds is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. His name is also inscribed on the Korean War Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC, which was updated in 2022 to include the names of the fallen.
