Canup, Grady H.
Army Staff sergeant
Grady H. Canup from South Carolina, Greenwood county.
Service era: World War II
Date of death: Tuesday, November 14, 1944
Death details: On January 26, 2022, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Staff Sergeant Grady H. Canup, missing from World War II. Staff Sergeant Grady H. Canup entered the U.S. Army from South Carolina and served with Company C, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On November 14, 1944, he was serving on the front lines of the Battle of Hürtgen Forest near Germeter, Germany. That day, SSG Canup was in a fox hole that was hit by an enemy artillery shell. He was killed in the incident, and his remains could not be recovered. American Graves Registration Command conducted investigations of the Hürtgen Forest after the war from 1946 to 1950. Some of the remains recovered during this time could not be identified, and were buried as unknowns at American military cemeteries in Europe. Recently, research by a DPAA historian prompted the reexamination of a set of unknown remains that had been recovered from the Hürtgen Forest area in 1947 and buried as unknown remains at the Ardennes American Cemetery. The remains were accessioned into the DPAA laboratory where they were identified as those of SSG Canup.
