Lt. Francis G. Turton was my “Uncle Fran” who I never had the pleasure to meet. Lt. Turton was a Platoon Leader for Co. D, 787th Tank Battalion. From Watervliet, NY, he participated in the D-Day Invasion, Liberation of France (where he earned a Purple Heart and the Silver Star), Battle of the Bulge and the Liberation of Belgium. On approximately April 15, 1945 he was KIA by friendly fire in Bomberg , Germany.
