Death details: On June 6, 2025, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency identified the remains of U.S. Army Pfc. John Henry Moore, missing from the Korean War. Moore entered the Army from Virginia and served in B Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On Sept. 16, 1950, the 8th Cavalry Regiment advanced north from Taegu toward Tabu-dong, South Korea. Three days later, Moore’s battalion was ordered to secure the highway leading into the village. Before reaching its objective, the unit came under heavy enemy mortar and small-arms fire and was forced to withdraw. Moore was killed in action during this engagement. When U.S. forces secured the village three days later, his remains could not be recovered. That same month, American personnel recovered a set of remains near Sin-dong, South Korea. The remains could not be identified at the time and were eventually transferred to Hawaii and buried as a Korean War Unknown at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. In March 2022, DPAA personnel disinterred this set of remains as part of a project to recover and identify Korean War Unknowns. The remains were analyzed using modern forensic techniques, and Moore was identified.
