Death details: On May 10, 2016, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Sergeant James Lawrence Campbell, missing from the Korean War. Sergeant Campbell joined the U.S. Army from Connecticut and was a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. In late November of 1950, Chinese Communist Forces launched a large-scale attack against U.S. troops at the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea, forcing them to withdraw south. SGT Campbell’s unit was positioned on the eastern side of the reservoir at the outset of the attack, and SGT Campbell was reported missing in action following the withdrawal. He was never reported to be a prisoner of war, and his remains were not located immediately following the war. In December 1993, a set of commingled remains reportedly recovered from the east Chosin area were returned to U.S. custody. Forensic analysis eventually identified SGT Campbell from among these remains.
