Evans, David Burton
Marine Corps 2nd lieutenant
David Burton Evans from Mt Shasta, California, Siskiyou county.
Service era: Korea
Date of death: Tuesday, September 30, 1952
Death details: Second Lieutenant David Burton Evans entered the U.S. Marine Corps from California and served with the Marine Attack Squadron 121, Marine Air Group 12, 1st Marine Air Wing. On September 30, 1952, 2ndLt Evans piloted a single-seat AD-2 Skyraider (bureau number 122273) that took off from K-6 airfield, Pyongtaek, South Korea, as one of three aircraft on a close air support mission. During the mission, the flight checked in with ground control and the forward air controller (FAC) which directed them to a concentration of enemy troops, bunkers, and mortar positions. Second Lieutenant Evans moved in to attack the target amid heavy anti-aircraft fire; however, his Skyraider was soon veered off its run and entered a dive, eventually crashing in a stream bed that caused the aircraft to break apart and catch fire. No parachute was observed and no radio distress calls were heard, and witnesses to the crash did not believe 2ndLt Evans could have survived. His remains were not recovered and he is still unaccounted for. Today, Second Lieutenant Evans is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
