Date of death: Wednesday, January 25, 1967
Death details: Private Arnold Brian Wallace entered the U.S. Army from California and was a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On January 25, 1967, he was aboard the USNS General John Pope (T-AP 110) en route to Vietnam when he got into an argument with a non-commissioned officer. As two military policemen (MP’s) were escorting him to the brig, he ran away from them and jumped overboard. He was seen to hit the water on his back. The MP’s immediately signalled “Man Overboard” and threw a light marker and two life preservers into the water. Search efforts were initiated immediately and lasted 19 hours but were unsuccessful in locating PVT Wallace, and he was not seen again. Today, Private Wallace is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
