Air Force Colonel

David Hartzler Zook from West Liberty, Ohio, Logan county. Their last known residence was in West Liberty.

Service era: Vietnam

Date of death: October 4, 1967
Death details: On August 20, 2008, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC, now DPAA) identified the remains of Colonel David Hartzler Zook Jr., missing from the Vietnam War.
Colonel Zook entered the U.S. Air Force from Ohio and was a member of the 5th Air Commando Squadron. On October 4, 1967, he piloted a U-10B Super Courier (tail number unknown) flying an unknown mission over Song Be Province, South Vietnam, when his aircraft collided in midair with another aircraft. The U-10B impacted the ground and exploded, killing Col Zook. Several search and rescue attempts failed to locate Col Zook’s remains at the time. However, between 1992 and 1993, a joint U.S./Vietnamese team investigated the incident in Song Be Province, interviewing witnesses and recovering artifacts and human remains. In March 2008, a final excavation was conducted and more human remains were recovered, and modern forensic techniques were able to identify Col Zook among them.
