Smeltzer notified the rest of the unit and then with complete disregard for his personal safety, explosed himself to the enemy fire while directing his men into a more protected position where they could place effective counter-fire on the aggressors, and while psitioning his comrades, Sgt. Smeltzer was mortally wounded.”
