Death details: Second Lieutenant Gary Bernard Scull, who entered the U.S. Army from Iowa, was a member of Advisory Team 3, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. He served as an assistant battalion advisor to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) 2nd Battalion, 2nd Regiment, 1st Division and was assigned to an outpost responsible for guarding the Khe Gio Bridge on Highway 9. On March 12, 1970, the outpost came under enemy attack and 2LT Scull’s bunker was hit and caught fire. He could not be located following the attack, although ARVN and U.S. personnel made multiple search attempts. He remains unaccounted for. Following the incident, the Army posthumously promoted 2LT Scull to the rank of Major (MAJ). Today, Major Scull is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
Gary is memorialized at Harlan Cemetery.
