Death details: On July 27, 1989, the Central Identification Laboratory-Hawaii (CILH, now DPAA) identified the remains of Major Robert Gordon Cozart Jr., missing from the Vietnam War. Major Cozart joined the U.S. Army from Louisiana and was a member of the 214th Aviation Battalion. On March 20, 1970, he piloted an O-1G Bird Dog on a visual reconnaissance mission over Vinh Binh Province, Vietnam. Major Cozart’s aircraft went down due for unknown reasons at some point during the mission, and he was killed in the incident. Search and rescue efforts launched when the Bird Dog failed to return were unsuccessful. In April 1989, the Vietnamese government returned a set of unidentied remains to U.S. custody. Later that year, U.S. analysts identified the returned remains as those of MAJ Cozart.
