Death details: Seaman (SN) Harry E. Mitchell, who joined the U.S. Navy from Indiana, served aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Long Beach (CGN-9). On May 6, 1968, SN Mitchell and a fellow crew member, who was a close friend, failed report for their assigned work details aboard the Long Beach, which was off the coast of northern Vietnam at the time. An extensive search was conducted for the two men which involved several other U.S. Navy ships but was unsuccessful. Seaman Mitchell was not seen again. Subsequent to the incident and while carried in the status of missing in action, the U.S. Navy promoted SN Mitchell to the rank of Senior Chief Torpedomans Mate (TMCS). Today, TMCS Mitchell is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
Based on all information available, DPAA assessed the individual’s case to be in the analytical category of Non-recoverable.
