Death details: The “date of casualty” stated by the military is July 1, 1970. That’s when James was hit by friendly fire. However, he survived and returned to Massachusets as a paraplegic. He lived with family for decades.

Date of death: Sunday, February 11, 1990
Death details: Lee was wounded Sept. 5, 1969 as he walked at the head of an infantry patrol in the jungle north of Saigon. A mine explosion shattered his legs. A comrade carried him behind a rock, but Lee was struck in the back by an enemy bullet. Lee was almost put in a body bag when another soldier noticed he was breathing. He lived the next decades in pain. He died from a heart muscle swelling caused by his war injuries.

Death details: In December 1966, shrapnel tore into his shoulder while on patrol in South Vietnam. He left the hospital and returned to the jungle within a month. The next year he was wounded again. This time on patrol near Quang Ngai. A mortar exploded, sending fragments into his face, chest, arms. He was placed into a body bag, but later someone saw the bag move. He was taken to a hospital. He died from those wounds.
