Death details: On May 31, 2015, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Corporal Grant Harry Ewing, missing from the Korean War. Corporal Ewing joined the U.S. Army from Colorado and was a member of Battery C, 38th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. In late 1950, his unit was positioned northeast of Kunu-ri, North Korea. On November 27, 1950, the 2nd Infantry Division came under attack from Chinese Communist Forces (CCF), forcing them to withdraw south to more defensible positions. The withdrawing men had to fight through CCF roadblocks, and CPL Ewing was among men captured during this battle. He was taken to POW Camp 5 in Pyoktong, where he died in February 1951. His remains were not identified among those returned to U.S. custody immediately after the war. Between 1990 and 1994, the North Korean government returned hundreds of human remains, including some recovered from the area of CPL Ewing’s loss. CPL Ewing was eventually identified from among these repatriated remains. Corporal Ewing is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. His name is also inscribed on the Korean War Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC, which was updated in 2022 to include the names of the fallen.
