Death details: On April 3, 2001, Joint Task Force-Full Accounting (JTF-FA, now DPAA) identified the remains of Lance Corporal John Benedict Nahan III, missing from the Vietnam War.
Lance Corporal Nahan entered the U.S. Marine Corps from Michigan and served with Company A, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. On August 3, 1967, he was aboard a CH-46A Sea Knight (bureau number 151923) that was extracting a Marine reconnaissance team in Thua Thien Province, South Vietnam. During the mission, the helicopter was struck by enemy fire and crashed, killing LCpl Nahan. His body could not be recovered from the crash site at the time due to the presence of enemy forces nearby. In 1994, a joint search team located and excavated this helicopter’s crash site, recovering human remains. Analysts were subsequently able to identify LCpl Nahan among the remains recovered.
