Death details: On April 16, 1991, the Central Identification Laboratory-Hawaii (CILHI, now DPAA) identified the remains of Sergeant First Class Vernon Zigman Johns, missing from the Vietnam War.
Sergeant First Class Johns entered the U.S. Army from Maryland and served with Company B, 4th Mechanized Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 25 Infantry Division. On February 3, 1968, SFC Johns was killed in action by enemy fire while manning a machine gun mounted on his armored personnel carrier. His remains were not recovered at the time. In 1989, the Vietnamese government repatriated human remains and personal artifacts that were recovered from a burial site correlating to this loss, and in 1991, U.S. analysts identified SFC Johns from these remains.
