Death details: Flight Officer Carl J. Woods, who joined the U.S. Army Air Forces from Pennsylvania, was a Tuskegee Airman and a member of the 100th Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group. On October 7, 1944, he took off from Ramitelli Air Base, Italy, in a P-51C Mustang (serial number 42-102954) as part of a fighter escort for a bombing mission to the Lobau Oil Refineries in Vienna, Austria. While flying over the Adriatic Sea en route to the target, Flight Officer Woods’s formation was signaled to climb in altitude to fly over a cloud bank. Flight Officer Woods could not be located once the maneuver had been completed, and he was not seen again. Attempts to locate him or his remains following his disappearance were unsuccessful. Today, Flight Officer Woods is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at the Florence American Cemetery in Impruneta, Italy.
