Death details: On June 4, 2018, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Technical Sergeant Harry (Horace) Arnold Carlsen, missing from World War II. Technical Sergeant Carlsen entered the U.S. Marine Corps from Oklahoma and served in Company A, 2nd Amphibious Tractor Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. On November 20, 1943, he was killed in action during the Battle of Tarawa, as part of the large-scale assault on the island of Betio. TSgt Carlsen was buried on Betio, but he could not be identified among remains disinterred from the island following the war. In 2013, previously unidentified remains from Betio were analyzed using modern forensic techniques, and TSgt Carlsen was eventually identified from among these remains.
