Death details: On September 13, 2018, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Fireman First Class Angelo Michael Gabriele, missing from World War II. Fireman First Class Gabriele, who joined the U.S. Navy from New Jersey, was aboard the USS West Virginia (BB-43) during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was killed during the incident, and although his remains were recovered in the aftermath of the attack, they could not be identified at the time. F1 Gabriele was buried as an “unknown” at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. In 2015, advances in forensic technology prompted the reexamination and eventual identification of F1 Gabriele’s remains.
