Glenn K. Springer from California.
Service era: World War II
Date of death: Unknown
Death details: The battle for control of the Philippine Islands began in December 1941, as U.S. and Philippine forces defended the islands against Japanese invaders. U.S. troops eventually fell back to a defensive line on the Bataan Peninsula on Luzon, beginning what would be known as the Battle of Bataan. They withstood the Japanese until April 9, 1942, when U.S. forces in the peninsula surrendered. The island stronghold of Corregidor, located in Manila Bay off the coast of Bataan, was the last holdout in the Philippines. Without taking control of Corregidor, the Japanese could not safely use Manila Bay as a harbor. The U.S. and Philippine forces defended Corregidor until May 1942, when Japanese troops invaded the island fortress and took control, forcing the Allied troops there to surrender. Private First Class Glenn K. Springer entered the U.S. Army from California and served in the 60th Coastal Artillery Regiment. He was declared missing in action following the fall of Corregidor. One report from a former American P.O.W. suggested that PFC Springer was captured and died at the Cabanatuan camp in July of 1942, but his exact fate remains unknown. His remains have not been recovered or identified following the war, and he is still unaccounted-for. Today, Private First Class Springer is memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.
