Death details: On March 27, 1991, the Central Identification Laboratory-Hawaii (CILH, now DPAA) identified the remains of Staff Sergeant Robert Lee Greer, missing from the Vietnam War. Staff Sergeant Greer joined the U.S. Marine Corps from California and was a member of Marine Air Base Squadron 16. On June 7, 1964, he and another Marine departed the Marine base at Da Nang, Vietnam, on a non-duty trip to a hill overlooking the Da Nang airfield. Both men were captured by the Viet Cong during their trip. Staff Sergeant Greer died at some point while in enemy custody. In November 1990, the Vietnamese government repatriated a set of unidentified remains to U.S. custody. U.S. analysts identified part of the returned remains as those of SSgt Greer.
