Death details: On February 22, 2016, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Private First Class George Harry Traver, missing from World War II. Private First Class Traver entered the U.S. Marine Corps from New York and served in Company K, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. He was reportedly killed in action on November 20, 1943, during the assault on Betio Island during the invasion of Tarawa. PFC Traver’s body was not recovered following the battle. In 2015 the nongovernmental organization History Flight Inc. discovered a burial site on Betio and recovered human remains there. DPAA scientists analyzed these remains and were able to individually identify Private First Class Traver from among them.
