Death details: Private First Class Robert William Gumbert Jr., who joined the U.S. Army from Ohio, served with Company B, 4th Battalion, 21st Infantry, Americal Division. On June 22, 1970, he walked point for his squad on a combat mission in Quang Ngai Province, South Vietnam. As PFC Gumbert traversed an area of hedgerows, an explosive device detonated, killing PFC Gumbert. Searchers were unable to locate his body, and he remains unaccounted for. Today, Private First Class Gumbert is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
