Sanchez, Gilberto L.
Army Corporal

Gilberto L. Sanchez from Texas, Comal county.

Service era: Korea

Date of death: Saturday, December 2, 1950

Death details: On November 25, 2014, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC, now DPAA) identified the remains of Sergeant Gilberto Lopez Sanchez, missing from the Korean War.

Sergeant Sanchez entered the U.S. Army from Texas and was a member of the Medical Company, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division; his unit was attached to the 31st Regimental Combat Team (RCT) during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. In late November 1950, the 31st RCT was deployed east of the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea when it was attacked by Chinese Communist Forces and forced to withdraw to more defensible positions near Hagaru-ri. SGT Sanchez was killed in action during this fighting withdrawal on or around December 2, and his remains were not recovered at the time. Between 1991 and 1994, the North Korean government repatriated the remains of a number of U.S. service members, including some recovered from the area where SGT Sanchez was killed; in 2014, U.S. analysts using modern forensic techniques were able to identify SGT Sanchez from among these remains.
