Death details: On January 17, 1997, the Joint Task Force-Full Accounting (JTF-FA, now DPAA) identified the remains of Captain James Linton Huard, missing from the Vietnam War.

Captain Huard joined the U.S. Air Force from Michigan and was a member of the 433rd Tactical Fighter Squadron. On July 12, 1972, he piloted an F-4E Phantom II (serial number 69-0302) on a combat mission over enemy territory in Vietnam. Captain Huard’s aircraft was shot down over Quang Binh Province, and he was killed in the crash. Search and rescue teams were launched when the Phantom failed to return, but they could not locate the aircraft’s crash site and Capt Huard’s remains were not recovered at the time. In December 1988, the Vietnamese government returned Capt Huard’s remains to U.S. custody; however, it was not until several years later that forensic analysis confirmed the identification.

Robertson, Mark John

Death details:  On March 16, 2004, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC, now DPAA) identified the remains of Warrant Officer 1 John Mark Robertson, missing from the Vietnam War.

Warrant Officer 1 Robertson entered the U.S. Army from Michigan and served with the 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment. On February 10, 1971, he was the pilot of an OH-6A Cayuse (tail number 66-17765) on a reconnaissance mission over Thua Thien Province, South Vietnam. During the mission, the Cayuse was hit by enemy machine gun fire, caught fire, crashed, and exploded, killing WO1 Robertson. Friendly forces were unable to recover his remains at the time, due to the enemy presence in the area. During the 1990s, a joint investigative team located and excavated the crash site, recovering material evidence and fragmentary human remains. Forensic analysis eventually identified WO1 Robertson from these remains.

Death details: Ten minutes after his departure from Phan Rang Air Base, the pilot started the descent to Cam Ranh Bay via a steep valley (3 km wide and 15 km long) at an altitude of 2,700 feet via heading 30°. Shortly later, ATC instructed the crew to change heading to 100° when contact was lost. The airplane struck trees with its both wings, stalled and crashed in flames in a dense wooded area located few km from Cam Ranh Bay Airport. Rescuers arrived on the scene five days later and found two men still alive while 42 other occupants were killed. At the time of the accident, the visibility was nil due to low clouds. James was returning to the U.S.

Death details: Silver Star citation: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Thomas Henry Gentinne (ASN: 0/5352729/54965301), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Gentinne distinguished himself while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company A, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On 12 May 1969, Company A was in a night position near the rock quarry northwest of the Oasis. At approximately 2000 hours Company A began receiving incoming rounds consisting of mortars, rockets and recoilless rifle fire. Immediately, Lieutenant Gentinne, with complete disregard for his own safety, moved through the intense barrage of incoming rounds to better position his men for an expected ground assault by the North Vietnamese. Lieutenant Gentinne then directed his platoons fire upon the suspected enemy rocket, mortar and recoilless rifle positions. While courageously braving the enemy fire to better position himself, First Lieutenant Gentinne was mortally wounded by an incoming enemy recoilless rifle round. First Lieutenant Gentinnes personal bravery, outstanding performance and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
