Mape, John Clement

Date of death: Wednesday, April 13, 1966
Death details: On February 19, 1999, the the Central Identification Laboratory-Hawaii (CILHI, now DPAA) identified the remains of Commander John Clement Mape, missing from the Vietnam War. Commander Mape, who joined the U.S. Navy from California, was a member of Attack Squadron 52, Carrier Air Wing 5, embarked aboard the USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14). On April 13, 1966, he was the pilot of an A-1 Skyraider (bureau number unknown) on a mission over North Vietnam when his aircraft was shot down and he was killed. Hostile presence in the area prevented search teams from locating and recovering his remains. In 1998, U.S. investigators located the crash site and recovered remains. which were later identified as those of Commander Mape. Commander Mape is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. His name is also inscribed along with all his fallen comrades on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC.
