Death details: During the last week of October 1950, Republic of Korea (ROK) Army forces under the control of the U.S. Eighth Army were advancing deep in North Korean territory, approaching the Yalu River on the Chinese-Korean border. Chinese Communist Forces (CCF) struck back in a surprise attack, engaging the ROK 1st and 6th Divisions near Unsan, some sixty miles north of Pyongyang. The U.S. 1st Cavalry Division, with the 8th Cavalry Regiment in the lead, was rushed forward to reinforce the ROK units in the Unsan area. On November 1, the regiment’s 1st Battalion took up positions north of Unsan, while the 2nd Battalion moved to guard the Nammyon River valley west of town, and the 3rd Battalion was placed in reserve at the valley’s southern end. Corporal Alfred Derril Oglesby joined the U.S. Army from California and was a member of Company B of the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On November 2, 1950, Company B was in defensive positions with the 1st Battalion near Unsan, when it came under CCF attack and was forced to withdraw. Corporal Oslesby went missing during this combat, though circumstances surrounding his loss are unknown. Additionally, he was never reported as a prisoner of war, and his remains were not identified among those returned to the U.S. following the war. Today, Corporal Oglesby is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Foss, Robert W.

Death details: ​On July 5, 1942, a C-53B Skytrooper (serial number 41-20048) took off from Elmendorf Army Air Force Base, Alaska, on a transport mission to Seattle, Washington, carrying four crew members and twelve passengers. Approximately twenty-five miles northeast of Fort Randall, Cold Bay, Alaska, the aircraft crashed into a mountain on Kodiak Island in the Seward Peninsula off of northwest Alaska. All sixteen men on board died in the crash, but only the remains of six were recovered. The other ten occupants remain unaccounted for. Second Lieutenant Robert W. Foss, who joined the U.S. Army Air Forces from California, was a member of Headquarters, 11th Air Force, and was assigned to the 54th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group. He was a passenger aboard this Skytrooper when it crashed during its transport mission to Seattle. His remains were not recovered following the crash. Today, Second Lieutenant Foss is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
