Death details: Died aboard the USS Stark. While in the Persian Gulf on May 17, 1987, she was struck by two Iraqi Exocet missiles, killing 37 sailors and wounding 21. Brought under control, the frigate sailed to Bahrain and was successfully repaired at Ingalls Shipbuilding, Pascagoula, Mississippi. Following repairs and subsequent tours in the Atlantic and Middle East, Stark was decommissioned on May 7, 1999, and was scrapped in 2006.

Death details:  

On October 6, 1972, an OV-10 Bronco (tail number 67-014673, call sign “Covey 2”) with two crew members embarked on a forward air control mission over South Vietnam. As the aircraft was returning from its mission, it disappeared from friendly radar tracking. The next day, a U.S. Navy vessel located the Bronco’s wreckage in the water in the vicinity of (GC) 48Q AT 971 966. The bodies of the crew members were not found.

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Bruce Edward Boltze, who joined the U.S. Marine Corps from Michigan, served with Sub Unit 1, 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company. He was the observer aboard the Bronco when it disappeared, and his remains were not recovered. Today, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Boltze is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
