Bell, Richard William
Navy Aviation Electronics Technician-Radar 3rd Class

Death details: 

On October 2, 1969, a C-2A Greyhound (bureau number 152796) carrying five crew members and twenty passengers took off on a routine logistics support flight from Cubi Point Naval Station, Republic of the Philippines, to the USS Constellation (CVA 64) in the Gulf of Tonkin. En route, the aircraft was in radio and radar contact with the carrier when it suddenly disappeared from the radar. There were no distress calls or beepers heard. An extensive air and surface search was begun immediately and recovered some personal effects and aircraft debris, but no survivors. Eventually, a crash site was discovered off the coast of North Vietnam, however, no remains were recovered.

Aviation Electronics Technician Third Class Richard William Bell entered the U.S. Navy from Pennsylvania and was a member of Fighter Squadron 142, embarked aboard the Constellation. He was a passenger aboard this Greyhound when it crashed, and was lost with the aircraft. His remains were not recovered. Today, Aviation Electronics Technician Third Class Bell is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Based on all information available, DPAA assessed the individual’s case to be in the analytical category of Non-recoverable.

Scott, Dain Vanderlin
Navy Lieutenant Commander

Dain Vanderlin Scott, age 25, from Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, Allegheny county.

Date of death: August 21, 1967

Death details:  On August 21, 1967, an A-6A Intruder (bureau number 152627, call sign “Milestone 402”) launched in a flight of four from the aircraft carrier USS Constellation (CVA 4) on a strike mission outside Hanoi, North Vietnam. During egress from the target area, this Intruder was attacked by enemy aircraft. “Milestone 402” went missing during the resulting aerial combat and did not return to the ship, though exact circumstances surrounding its loss are unknown. Only the pilot’s remains have been accounted for.

Lieutenant Junior Grade Dain Vanderlin Scott entered the U.S. Navy from Pennsylvania and was a member of Attack Squadron 196, Carrier Air Wing 14. He was the bombardier/navigator aboard this Intruder and he was lost with the aircraft. His remains were not recovered and further attempts to locate them have been unsuccessful. Subsequent to the incident, and while carried in the status of missing in action (MIA), the U.S. Navy promoted LTJG Scott to the rank of Lieutenant Commander (LCDR). Today, Lieutenant Commander Scott is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
