Frank Louis Masoni, age 21, from Gilroy, California, Santa Clara county.
Parents: Cloranda Masoni
Service era: World War II
Date of death: Sunday, November 21, 1943
Death details: On August 28, 2017, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Assistant Cook Frank L. Masoni, missing from World War II. Assistant Cook Masoni, who entered the U.S. Marine Corps from California, was a member of Headquarters Company, 2nd Marine Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, which took part in the Battle of Tarawa. On November 21, 1943, he was killed in action during the second day of battle, and his body was likely buried in a communal grave on Betio, Tarawa Atoll, with a memorial grave erected for him in Cemetery 11. In 1946, the 604th Quartermaster Graves Registration Company recovered remains of U.S. service members from the communal burial sites on Betio. These remains were sent to the Central Identification Laboratory (now DPAA), Hawaii, but Assistant Cook Masoni was not identified at this time. Any of these “unknowns” were then interred in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Hawaii, and in 2016, using modern forensic techniques, DPAA identified Assistant Cook Masoni’s remains from among them.
