Death details: Lieutenant Malcolm Arthur Avore, who joined the U.S. Navy from Maine, was a member of Attack Squadron 163, embarked aboard the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany (CVA 34). On July 18, 1965, he piloted a single-seat A-4E Skyhawk (bureau number 151089) that performed a catapult launch from the deck of the Oriskany. After the launch, LT Avore’s aircraft crashed into the South China Sea 400 yards in front of the ship. He did not eject from the Skyhawk before it hit the water, and searches of the area did not locate him or his aircraft. Lieutenant Avore remains unaccounted for following the incident. Today, Lieutenant Avore is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
