Date of death: Monday, November 22, 1943
Death details: On September 25, 2018, the Defense Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Private First Class William E. Brandenburg, missing from World War II. Private First Class Brandenburg, who joined the U.S. Marine Corps in Ohio, served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. On November 20, 1943, PFC Brandenburg participated in the invasion of Betio Island, the largest island in the Japanese-held Tarawa Atoll. Company A landed on the northern coast of the island and fought through the island over the course of two days, meeting heavy Japanese resistance. PFC Brandenburg was killed in action on November 22, 1943, during the fighting on Betio. He was buried in the Central Division Cemetery on Betio Island. After the war, his remains were disinterred and repatriated to the U.S.; however, they could not be identified at the time and were buried as unknowns in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. In 2016, DPAA disinterred these remains for further analysis, and eventually successfully identified PFC Brandenburg.
