Bishop, Edward James Jr.
Army Staff sergeant

Edward James Jr. Bishop, age 22, from Hartford, Connecticut.

Date of death: Tuesday, April 29, 1970
Death details:  Private First Class (PFC) Edward James Bishop Jr., who joined the U.S. Army from Connecticut, was a member of Company A, 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On April 29, 1970, he was part of the security element at fire support base Granite, located in the vicinity of (GC) YD 439 188 in South Vietnam. That night, the base came under enemy ground and mortar attack. PFC Bishop was seen firing on enemy units when an explosion occurred at his location, and he was not seen again. Searches of the area following the attack did not locate PFC Bishop or his remains, and he is still unaccounted-for. Following his disappearance, the Army promoted PFC Bishop to the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSG). Today, Staff Sergeant Bishop is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Based on all information available, DPAA assessed the individual’s case to be in the analytical category of Non-recoverable.
