Air Force Colonel

Paul Gerard Underwood from Hornell, New York, Steuben county.

Service era: Vietnam

Date of death: March 16, 1966
Death details: On January 28, 1998, the Joint Task Force-Full Accounting (JTF-FA, now DPAA) identified the remains of Colonel Paul Gerard Underwood, missing from the Vietnam War.

Colonel Underwood joined the U.S. Air Force from New York and was a member of the 333rd Tactical Fighter Squadron. On March 16, 1966, he piloted an F-105D Thunderchief on a strike mission over enemy territory in Vietnam. Colonel Underwood’s aircraft went down during the mission, and he died in the incident. Immediate search and rescue efforts were unsuccessful in locating his remains.
