Conger, John Edward Jr.
Army Sergeant 1st class

John Edward Conger Jr. from Lebanon, Ohio, Warren county. Their last known residence was in Lebanon.

Service era: Vietnam

Date of death: Janaury 27, 1969
Death details: Private First Class John Edward Conger Jr. entered the U.S. Army from Ohio and served in Company A, 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 199th Light Infantry Brigade. On January 27, 1969, he was a rifleman in a unit on a search and destroy mission in Long An Province, South Vietnam. While crossing a field, his unit came under enemy machine gun fire that wounded several members of the unit. Private First Class Conger moved up to help knock out the machine gun nests but was hit in his neck and shoulder. He was seen falling over, touching his wound several times, then not moving. Airstrikes were then called into the area where PFC Conger fell, followed by artillery strikes through the rest of the day and into the evening. Private First Class Conger’s remains could not be found following these strikes. Further attempts to recover them were unsuccessful. Following his loss, the Army promoted PFC Conger to the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC). Today, Sergeant First Class Conger is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
