Captain Cressey entered the U.S. Air Force from Wyoming and served with the 390th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 366th Tactical Fighter Wing. On May 12, 1972, he was a weapons system officer aboard an F-4E Phantom II (tail number unknown) that took off from Da Nang Air Base on a forward air control mission over Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. The aircraft crashed for unknown reasons and Capt Cressey did not survive the incident. Aerial searches failed to locate the crash site, and his body was not recovered at the time. In 1974, a U.S. search team located the crash site and recovered human remains that U.S. analysts eventually identified as those of Capt Cressey.
