Scott, Benjamin White
Army Private 1st class

Benjamin White Scott from Mississippi, Lowndes county.

Service era: Korea

Date of death: Tuesday, July 11, 1950
Death details: On February 25, 2019, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Corporal Benjamin White Scott, missing from the Korean War. Corporal Scott, who joined the U.S. Army from Mississippi, served with Company M, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. On July 11, 1950, North Korean forces attacked his unit’s defensive positions near Choch’iwon, South Korea, forcing them to withdraw. CPL Scott was lost at some point during this action, though the precise circumstances of his loss remain unknown and his remains were not recovered at the time. In 1952, remains were recovered near Chigong-ri, in an area corresponding to the 24th Infantry Division’s battle with North Korean forces. Some of these remains were processed without a positive identification and buried as “unknowns” at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery Tanggok, and then later transferred to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. In 2017, advances in forensic techniques prompted DPAA’s request for disinterment of ten sets of “unknowns” initially buried at Tanggok, and analysts eventually identified CPL Scott from among these remains.
