George Robert Duane Cross from Marysville, Washington, Snohomish county.
Service era: Korea
Date of death: Saturday, October 25, 1952
Death details: Captain George Robert Duane Cross, who entered the U.S. Marine Corps from North Dakota, served with Marine Attack Squadron 323, Marine Air Group 12, 1st Marine Air Wing. On October 25, 1952, he took off from K-6 airfield, South Korea, piloting an AU-1 Corsair (bureau number 129366) to take part in an attack mission against enemy rail targets in North Korea. While making his bomb run over the target area, his aircraft was struck in the tail area by enemy anti-aircraft fire, causing it to go out of control and crash. No parachute was observed and the aircraft disintegrated on impact with the ground; observers believed that pilot survival was not possible. Because of this, and because the crash site was in enemy territory, no search was conducted. Captain George’s remains have not been recovered and he is still unaccounted for. Today, Captain Cross is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
