Ronald V. Stanton, age 21, from Massillon, Ohio, Stark county.

Death details: On November 13, 2000, the Joint Task Force–Full Accounting (JTF-FA, now DPAA) identified the remains of Sergeant First Class Ronald V. Stanton, missing from the Vietnam War. Sergeant First Class Stanton entered the U.S. Army from Ohio and served with the 243rd Assault Helicopter Company, 10th Combat Aviation Battalion. On October 20, 1968, he was the door gunner aboard a CH-47A Chinook (tail number 66-19053, call sign “Freight Train 53”) that took off from Dong Ba Thien Airfield, South Vietnam, on a resupply mission to Ban Me Thuot. While over the Ninh Hoa Valley, the helicopter crashed for unknown reasons, killing SFC Stanton. His body was not recovered at the time. The crash site was eventually located in Khan Hoa Province and in 1995, a U.S. investigative team recovered human remains that analysts were later able to identify as those of SFC Stanton.

Charles James Goller, age 21, from Stark County Massillon, Ohio .

Death details: On October 15, 1942, he was in a U.S. convoy of six ships that was towing barges loaded with urgently needed supplies toward Guadalcanal. The American forces on that island were in dire need of resupply. When the convoy was spotted by enemy aircraft, all but two ships withdrew from the area. The two ships that pressed on were the USS Meredith (DD-434,) a destroyer, and the USS Vireo (AM-54,) a lightly armed towing vessel. Upon receiving word that Japanese surface warships were operating in the area, both ships were forced to turn back from their mission. Because of its age and slow speed, Vireo was abandoned, and the crew taken aboard the Meredith. Within minutes, the Meredith was attacked by a large force of enemy aircraft. The destroyer sustained multiple bomb and torpedo hits and quickly sank. The survivors spent three days at sea before being rescued. The majority of the crews of both ships was killed in the incident.
