Pfaffmann, Charles Brooks
Navy Lieutenant junior grade

Charles Brooks Pfaffmann, age 25, from Killingsworth, Connecticut, Middlesex county.

Service era: Vietnam

Date of death: Thursday, April 9, 1970
Death details: On April 9, 1970, a, E-2A Hawkeye (bureau number 151711, call sign “Sun King 012”) carrying a crew of five took off from the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) in the Gulf of Tonkin on an administrative mission. About one mile ahead of the ship, “Sun King 012” declared it had a fire in the aft compartment. The aircraft then impacted the water and broke apart two to three miles ahead of the Coral Sea. An extensive search of the wreckage recovered the remains of one of “Sun King 012’s” crew members; however, the other four men aboard the aircraft are still unaccounted for. Lieutenant Junior Grade Charles Brooks Pfaffmann, who joined the U.S. Navy from Connecticut, was a member of Carrier Early Warning Squadron 116. He was the pilot of “Sun King 012” when it went down, and was lost with the aircraft. His remains have not been recovered. Today, Lieutenant Junior Grade Pfaffmann is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Based on all information available, DPAA assessed the individual’s case to be in the analytical category of Non-recoverable.

Carnabuci, Primo Charles
Army Private 1st class

Primo Charles Carnabuci, age 19, from Old Saybrook, Connecticut, Middlesex county.

Parents: Mary C. Carnabuci

Service era: Korea

Date of death: Thursday, November 2, 1950
Death details: On Nov. 1, 1950, Carnabuci’s unit, the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, occupied a defensive position along the Kuryong River, near Unsan, North Korea. Chinese units attacked the area and forced a withdrawal. Almost 600 men, including Carnabuci, were reported missing or killed in action following the battle. In 2000, a joint U.S-Democratic People’s Republic of Korea team, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), excavated a mass grave discovered earlier in Unsan County, south of the area known as “Camel’s Head.” The team recovered remains of at least five individuals as well as military clothing. Analysts from DPMO and JPAC developed case leads with information spanning more than 58 years. They evaluated the circumstances surrounding the soldier’s death and researched wartime documentation on the movements of U.S. and enemy forces on the battlefield. Among forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC used dental comparisons and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory used mitochondrial DNA — which matched that of Carnabuci’s brother — in the identification.
