Beck, Edward Eugene Jr.

Edward Eugene Beck Jr., age 20, from North Canton, Ohio, Stark county. Their last known residence was in North Canton.

Date of death: August 9, 1969
Death details: Private First Class (PFC)  Edward Eugene Beck Jr. entered the U.S. Marine Corps from Ohio and was an artilleryman serving with W Battery, 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines embarked aboard the USS Belle Grove (LSD-2). On August 9, 1969, PFC Beck was seen during the morning hours as his unit prepared to off-load the Belle Grove while in Da Nang Harbor, Republic of (South) Vietnam. Less than one hour later, PFC Beck could not be located and was determined to be missing. Immediate searches of the ship and the surrounding water were made but could not locate him. A subsequent search was made of all ships connected with PFC Beck’s unit, in case he had changed ships, but were also unsuccessful. He was not seen again and remains unaccounted for. Subsequent to the incident and while carried in the status of missing in action, the U.S. Marine Corps promoted PFC Beck to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt). Today, GySgt Beck is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
