Sergeant First Class Cabral joined the U.S. Army from California and was a member of the Headquarters and Service Company, 2nd Engineer Combat Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. On November 30, 1950, he was captured by Chinese Communist Forces while fighting through a roadblock near Kunu-ri, South Korea. SFC Cabral died of malnutrition in March 1951, while being marched toward a prison camp near Pyoktong, North Korea, known as Camp 5. He was not identified among remains returned to U.S. custody immediately following the conflict’s ceasefire. In December 1993, the North Korean government returned 31 boxes of remains to U.S. custody, some of which were reportedly recovered from an area near the Camp 5 site. U.S. analysts eventually identified some of these recovered remains as those of SFC Cabral.
