Death details: On September 12, 1950, the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, engaged in a day-long battle for control of Hill 203 near Waegwan, South Korea. The unit reached the hill’s top and briefly displaced the enemy, but was later pushed back down the hill during the enemy’s counter-attack. By the day’s end, the 2nd Battalion remained on the hill’s slope with plans to reattempt on the next day. Corporal Thomas Edward Maye, who joined the U.S. Army from Kentucky, served with F Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was reported missing in action on September 12, 1950, after his unit’s attack on Hill 203 near Waegwan, South Korea. He was not seen to fall in battle and he was not reported to be a prisoner of war. The presence of the enemy on the battlefield prevented an immediate search for him, and he remains unaccounted-for following the incident. Today, Corporal Maye is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. His name is also inscribed on the Korean War Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC, which was updated in 2022 to include the names of the fallen.
