Death details: Suicide aboard USS James E. Williams while the ship was underway in the Red Sea. According to a report on the incident: “She reached our for help on the day she died but was rebuffed in her efforts…She believed she was being singled out because of her gender and her small size.”

Turose, Michael Stephen
Air Force 1st lieutenant

Michael Stephen Turose from Parma, Ohio, Cuyahoga county. Their last known residence was in Parma.

Date of death: Sunday, September 17, 1972
Death details:  On September 17, 1972, an F-105 Thunderchief (tail number 62-8360, call sign “Condor 01”) with a crew of two departed Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base on a combat mission. The aircraft was hit by a surface to air missile (SAM) in the vicinity of (GC) 48Q YH 187 827, and both crew members ejected. Their parachutes were seen to land in the Gulf of Tonkin. Search and rescue teams saw the bodies of both crew members below the surface of the water, but were unable to retrieve them due to harassing enemy fire. 

First Lieutenant Michael Stephen Turose, who joined the U.S. Air Force from Ohio, served with the 17th Wild Weasel Squadron. He was the electronic warfare officer aboard the Thunderchief when it was shot down, and his remains were not recovered. Today, First Lieutenant Turose is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. 

Based on all information available, DPAA assessed the individual’s case to be in the analytical category of Non-recoverable.

Zavocky, James John
Navy Lieutenant (junior grade)

James John Zavocky from Parma, Ohio, Cuyahoga county. Their last known residence was in Parma.

Date of death: Friday, August 25, 1967
Death details:  On August 25, 1967, an RA-3B Skywarrior (bureau number 144835, call sign “Quizshow 09”) with three crew members carried out a night reconnaissance mission over the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of North Vietnam. As the aircraft approached the coastline, radar contact was lost, and could not be reestablished. A search for “Quizshow 09” discovered no sign of it or its crew. All three members of the crew remain unaccounted for.

Lieutenant Junior Grade James John Zavocky, who joined the U.S. Navy from Ohio, was a member of Heavy Photographic Squadron 61. He was the photographer and navigator aboard “Quizshow 09” when it went missing, and he was lost with the aircraft. He remains unaccounted for. Today, Lieutenant Junior Grade Zavocky is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Patrick, Frank Jr.
Marines Private 1st class

Frank Jr. Patrick, age 22, from Parma, Ohio, Cuyahoga county.

Service era: Korea

Date of death: Thursday, March 26, 1953
Death details: In late March 1953, elements of the 1st Marine Division manned a string of outposts along a 33-mile section of the main line of resistance on the Korean Peninsula, near the present-day Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The 1st Marine Division’s 5th Marine Regiment was responsible for three of these outposts, named Carson, Reno, and Vegas, or collectively “the Nevada Cities Complex.” On March 26, Chinese Communist Forces attacked all three outposts. Although Carson managed to stave off the assault, Reno and Vegas, which were more lightly manned, eventually succumbed to the enemy. Over 1,000 Marines were killed, wounded, or went missing during the attack on the Nevada Cities Complex. Private First Class Frank Patrick Jr. joined the U.S. Marine Corps from Ohio and was a member of H Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He went missing in action during the fighting at the Nevada Cities Complex on March 26, 1953. He was never reported to be a prisoner of war, and he was not identified among remains returned to U.S. custody after the conflict’s ceasefire. Today, Private First Class Patrick is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
