Dale Francis Koons from Eaton, Ohio, Preble county. Their last known residence was in Eaton.
Service era: Vietnam
Date of death: December 26, 1971
Death details: On December 13, 1989, the Central Identification Laboratory-Hawaii (CILH, now DPAA) identified the remains of Captain Dale Francis Koons, missing from the Vietnam War.
Captain Koons joined the U.S. Air Force from Indiana and was a member of the 433rd Tactical Fighter Squadron. On December 26, 1971, he was the weapons systems operator aboard an F-4D Phantom II (serial number 66-8818) on a strike mission over enemy territory in Vietnam. The Phantom became separated from its flight and was shot down during the mission. Captain Koons was killed in the crash, and enemy presence in the area prevented search efforts for the missing plane and its crew. In April 1988, the Vietnamese government returned a set of remains that U.S. analysts were able to identify as those of Capt Koons.
