Bolte, Wayne Louis

Date of death: Sunday, April 2, 1972
Death details: On April 2, 1972, an EB-66 Destroyer (tail number 54-0466, call sign “Bat 21”) with six crew members took off from Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base for an electronic countermeasures mission over South Vietnam. While over the target area, an escort aircraft saw a surface-to-air missile (SAM) explode near “Bat 21,” after which the aircraft began trailing flames from both wings. “Bat 21” then broke into pieces and crashed. No parachutes were witnessed, although one rescue beeper was heard resulting in one crew member being rescued following the crash. The survivor reported the SAM had exploded below and behind the aircraft. The other five crew members are believed to have died in the incident and their remains were not recovered. Major (Maj) Wayne Louis Bolte entered the U.S. Air Force from Oklahoma and served in the 42nd Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron, 388th Tactical Fighter Wing. He was the pilot of “Bat 21” when it was shot down and attempts to locate and recover his remains were unsuccessful. Following the incident, the Air Force promoted Maj Bolte to the rank of Colonel. Today, Colonel Bolte is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Miller, Edward James Jackson

Date of death: Thursday, July 20, 1950
Death details: On July 20, 1950, the 3rd Battalion of the U.S. 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, was holding a defensive line in South Korea overlooking the Taejon Airport, northeast of the city. When enemy tanks broke through the line near the airport, U.S. troops were ordered to fall back through Taejon. The 3rd Battalion was ordered to lead the convoy out of Taejon, but ran into a series of collapsed structures and roadblocks that broke up the column. U.S. forces were unable to break through these roadblocks, and to avoid capture soldiers moved off-road and began filtering through the countryside in small groups. Sergeant Edward James Jackson Miller entered the U.S. Army from Oklahoma and served in M Company, 3rd Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He went missing in action on July 20 during the withdrawal from Taejon. His remains were not identified among those returned to U.S. custody following the war, and he is still unaccounted for. Today, Sergeant Miller is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. His name is also inscribed on the Korean War Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC, which was updated in 2022 to include the names of the fallen.
