Army Private 1st class
Charles Edward Sizemore, age 20, from Rushville, Indiana, Rush county.
Service era: Korea
Schools: Rushville High graduate
Date of death: Thursday, November 2, 1950
Death details: On August 22, 2006, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC, now DPAA) identified the remains of Corporal Charles Edward Sizemore, missing from the Korean War. Corporal Sizemore entered the U.S. Army from Indiana and served with the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On November 2, 1950, he was supporting elements of the 1st Cavalry Division near Unsan, North Korea, north of a bend in the Kuryong River known as the “Camel’s Head Bend.” That day, Chinese Communist Forces struck the 1st Cavalry Division’s lines, collapsing the perimeter and forcing a withdrawal. CPL Sizemore did not survive this combat, though the details surrounding his loss are unknown and his body not recovered at the time. In 2000, a joint U.S./North Korean investigative team interviewed a farmer living in the vicinity of Unsan, who led them to a burial site where they recovered human remains, and U.S. analysts identified CPL Sizemore from these remains.
