Date of death: Wednesday, July 18, 1951
Death details: Lieutenant Orville Melvin Cook, who joined the U.S. Navy from Illinois, served with Fighter Squadron 874 embarked aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard (CV 31). On July 19, 1951, piloting an AD3 Skyraider (bureau number 122760), he took off from the Bon Homme Richard as part of a six aircraft flight on a combat mission over North Korea. The flight encountered intense anti-aircraft fire over their target, a bridge north of Maemol. On his third dive over the bridge, LT Cook’s aircraft was hit by enemy fire. Other flight members searched a 10 mile radius around the target area but never found the crash site. LT Cook was not reported to be a prisoner of war, and his remains were not identified among those returned to U.S. custody after the war. Today, Lieutenant Cook is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
