Marines Reserves Private 1st class
Raymond Warren, age 21, from Silverdale, Kansas, Cowley county.
Service era: World War II
Date of death: Saturday, November 20, 1943
Death details: On June 10, 2019, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency identified the remains of Marine Pfc. Raymond Warren, missing from World War II. Warren entered the U.S. Marine Corps from Missouri and served with Company K, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. He was killed on November 20 or 21, 1943, during the assault on the Japanese-held island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll. His remains were buried on Betio, but his remains were not recovered at the time, nor was he identified among remains exhumed from the island after the war. In 2015, the non-profit organization History Flight excavated a burial site on Betio and recovered human remains, and DPAA forensic analysts eventually identified Warren from among these remains.
